True Blood is an American television drama series created and produced by Alan Ball, who also created Six Feet Under. True Blood is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, and details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a bar, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

True Blood employs a broad ensemble cast composed of regular, central characters and a rotating group of impermanent supporting characters. Though the series is based in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, a noticeable number of the actors comprising the cast are originally from outside the United States. In an interview, Ball explained that he didn't intentionally seek out "non-American" actors, but was willing to go anywhere he needed to in order "to find the actor who makes the character breathe". Ball went on to explain that, in casting, there was more of a focus on who would portray the character in a compelling way rather than who would physically resemble the characters from the book. Noting that there's a definite difference between the characters and storylines portrayed in True Blood and the ones depicted in The Southern Vampire Mysteries, he described Harris as being very understanding in terms of how her work was being reinterpreted.

The major characters of the first season of True Blood are introduced amongst various intertwining plot lines that surround the Bon Temps bar "Merlotte's". The show's main protagonist, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), is a telepath and waitress at Merlotte's.^E-1 In the opening episode she saves Merlotte's first vampire customer, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), when a local couple attempts to drain him of his blood (vampire blood is known on the show as a human narcotic: "V" or "V Juice") Through the relationship that develops between Sookie and Bill, the viewer progressively learns more about vampire culture and the limitations of vampire physiology.

 Season two focuses on two main plots – in the first, the disappearance of the 2,000-year old vampire Sheriff of Area 9, Godric, causes Eric to enlist Sookie and Bill's aid in finding the ancient vampire in Dallas. Their paths cross Jason's as he seeks to discover meaning in his life with the Fellowship of the Sun, a church dedicated to anti-vampire activities.

Alcide Herveaux is a werewolf who helps Sookie in finding Bill while Bill is help captive by Russell Edgington. He does this to relieve debt his family owed towards Eric Northman. Alcide is one of the few good werewolves introduced thus far. He is handsome and has an ongoing attraction with Sookie. He admits to Sookie early on that he used to be in love with his ex Debbie who is now a werewolf groupie. She lead people to believe she left him because he didn't want a baby. She also says he wasn't man enough and left him for Coot.
At the end of season three, Eric borrows Alcide's truck to help kill Edgington, finally relieving him of his debt to Eric. Alcide—first appearing in episode 3.03: It Hurts Me Too—is portrayed by Joe Manganiello, and appears as a supporting character during season three of True Blood. At ComicCon 2010 Manganiello announced that series creator Alan Ball had asked him to become a series regular as of season four.

Eric Northman is the Sheriff of Area 5, a vampire district in Louisiana. A Swedish Viking warrior in life, he is over 1,000 years old and is a powerful member of the vampire community. He runs the vampire bar, Fangtasia, in Shreveport, and develops an interest in Sookie Stackhouse after discovering her unique ability to read minds during the first season. Immensely strong and the oldest vampire in Louisiana, he rips a man into pieces during the second season. As sheriff he enforces vampire law, a duty that includes bringing Bill Compton to be tried by the Magister for killing a fellow vampire: Longshadow. Eric and Bill are portrayed as being in a strained form of conflict; Eric wanting Sookie but being unable to take her due to vampire etiquette, and Bill unable to act on his anger toward Eric due to being a vampire subject to Eric's jurisdiction as sheriff.

Bill Compton is a vampire romantically involved with Sookie. Turned during the American Civil War against his will, Bill shows more compassion for human life than many other vampires. He is outwardly expressive of his emotions and holds onto memories of his past human life, behaviors that are unique amongst his vampire peers. While not an extremely old vampire, Bill is quite powerful and was referred to by Russell Edgington as one of the most promising vampires in the Americas. Bill risks his life and standing in vampire society to protect Sookie from those who wish to take advantage of her fairy ancestry.
